Protective overglaze is not necessary for a healthy, enduring stained glass window. If not properly installed it can create more problems than it cures. It is important to make a decision based on your own unique circumstances. When protective overglaze is installed, consideration of materials, framing and ventilation is critical.

Provides vandalism and/or security protection
May guard against environmental pollutants and some
ultra-violet light exposure
Potential Drawbacks
Inhibits natural ventilation
May cause retention of condensation
Limits access for maintenance of windows and millwork
Offers only minimal energy payback
Can cause increased heat levels in the stained glass,
leading to damage of the window
May adversely affect the architectural aesthetics of the building
